    Carl Aubock Vice Versa floor lamps for Wiener Werkstatte, Austria, c1960. Created from polished brass, a cast iron base and topped with a fabric lampshade. The inverted conical base and shade balance really nicely and create a minimal aesthetic. The fourth-generation Viennese workshop of Carl Auböck combines traditional craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic. The enduring nature of Auböck designs like this floor lamp can be attributed to “simplicity and high quality—no fashionable tricks,” says Carl Auböck IV, who now oversees the workshop with his sister, Maria. “Such artefacts develop a soul over time, a certain patina.”

This lamp was part of Miguel Milá’s first collection for TRAMO, the company he founded to produce his own work in post-war Spain. He dabbled in a profession that he would later go on to master, that of a pre-industrial designer, seeking convenient solutions with the technology available. And becomes ever more beautiful with time. A cross-shaped base supports a square shaft that becomes circular in the middle, allowing the shade to be moved up and down. The shade’s height is adjustable via a rubber band stopper. A genuine lesson in intelligence and good taste, making minimal use of components. This was Miguel Milá’s first product that Santa & Cole re-released in 1986, 25 years after its creation. It comes in a range of five different woods for the structure and two shade colours, white or beige.

    Inspired by the traditional lanterns that light up homes along the coast, rural estates and open terraces, Cestita is the little sister of one of the most iconic lamps created by Miguel Milá. It can house an opal glass shade or a white plastic one, making it more child resistant. The size of this lamp object makes it easy to pick up and carry, equally ideal for both tabletops and floors. It is produced and assembled manually by European craftsmen, using traditional steam bending techniques for the wood, which is delicately polished and sturdily put together.     Dimple explores the idea of dependency and support in both an emotional and physical sense represented in this piece by the inherent material qualities of glass, metal and marble. Whilst the glass is still hot and in the hand blowing stage, an impression is made in the glass oviform allowing the carved marble sphere to nestle in the resulting dimple.
